Card: 2023 Metal Universe Connor Bedard Red PMG RC
I’ve been on a journey this year in the hobby, and as I progress with this site and IG account and find out what cards I truly love holding in my hand, there will be some changes.
There’s a common theme that I’ve encountered when I actually stopped to analyze the hobby and my place in it. That theme is summed up by two words: “unique” and “meaningful”. I’ve been collecting on and off for a long time and the reason I eventually always moved on from a card is because the cards I collected were either not unique enough or they weren’t meaningful to me. So with that in mind, this post will kick off version 2.0 of this IG account and blog.
(Side note: no filters or image enhancing will be used from now on either.)
Why I Acquired This Card:
Having grown up in BC, even living 5 years in North Van, it was pretty cool to see a BC kid with the hype that Bedard had. Also, being a Canucks fan, I was fully immersed in draft year Bedard mania, hoping beyond hope that he would end up a Canuck. I was even lucky enough to take the family and see him play when the Regina Pats visted Calgary on Feb 1st 2023 and the atmosphere was so cool to witness live (CB scored a goal and also had the shootout winner).
Bedard and Michkov are my two favorites from this new crop of NHL youngsters, so I want them represented in my collection. For a while, I had Bedard’s Young Guns Silver Outburst but eventually moved on for a few reasons, so when I spotted this PMG at a local card shop, I kept thinking about it because the color match, the shine, the rarity and the hobby relevance of PMGs are all things that matter to me. So after a week of thinking, I finally pulled the trigger on a part cash/part trade deal.

Why I Think This Card Matters:
With the printing presses off the charts during Bedard’s rookie year, I find you have to be selective with what Bedard you choose. This one is /100 and the true PMG (there’s three retro variations, including the iconic ’97 design — which I would also love to eventually acquire — but I think this one, being true, matters the most). It’s a card I feel will become rarer and rarer to see as time passes.
